According to practice guidelines from the International Society of Hypertension, lifestyle modification is part of first-line treatment for hypertension and can enhance the effects of other antihypertensive interventions. They recommend specifically controlling abdominal obesity, using ethnicity-specific cut-offs for BMI and waist circumference. Alternatively, they recommend a waist-to-height ratio of < 0.5 for all populations. The guidelines also recommend moderation of alcohol and salt consumption, eating a healthy diet, smoking cessation, stress reduction, avoidance of pollution, and regular physical activity.
