Concurrent MAOI use or use within 14 days of MAOI therapy is one of the contraindications to tapentadol use, owing to risk for serotonin syndrome. Tapentadol is a mu-opioid receptor agonist and a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Other contraindications include acute or severe asthma, gastrointestinal obstruction, and significant respiratory depression. Although oxycodone, hydromorphone, and methadone should be used with caution in patients with recent MAOI use, they are not contraindicated.
