According to a 2020 meta-analysis by Koarai and colleagues, maintenance therapy with LAMA in stable COPD provided a significantly lower incidence of exacerbation and nonserious adverse events compared with LABA.
At present, no treatments aside from lung transplantation have been shown to significantly improve lung function or decrease mortality, per Mosenifar and colleagues; however, when appropriate, oxygen therapy and smoking cessation may reduce mortality.
Both oral and inhaled maintenance therapies are available for patients with stable disease and may reduce dyspnea and improve exercise tolerance.
