According to AUA/CUA/SUFU guidelines, urinalysis, urine culture, and sensitivity should be obtained with each symptomatic acute cystitis episode before initiating treatment in women with rUTI. Other recommendations include use of first-line therapy for symptomatic rUTI treatment depending on the local antibiogram and treating with as short a duration of antibiotics as reasonable.
The guidelines recommend against routinely obtaining cystoscopy in the index patient presenting with rUTI. They also do not suggest obtaining surveillance urine testing (including urine culture) in asymptomatic patients, treating asymptomatic bacteriuria, or performing posttreatment test-of-cure urinalysis or urine culture in asymptomatic patients.
