Acute parvovirus B19 infection has been reported to produce acute symmetric polyarthritis that closely resembles polyarticular RA. Most patients with parvovirus B19 infection do not require laboratory studies because symptoms are mild, and the illness resolves over 5-7 days.

Other infections known to mimic RA include:

  • Chikungunya and other alphaviruses

  • Hepatitis B

  • Hepatitis C

  • HIV

  • Mycobacterial infections

  • Brucellosis

  • Lyme disease
