Gastric cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. However, there are differences in the incidence of gastric cancer by geographic region. In addition, the rates of gastric cancer are two times higher in men than in women. Up to 62% of gastric cancer cases in the United States are diagnosed at advanced stages and associated with a poor prognosis; further, the overall 5-year survival rate of gastric cancer is 32.4%. Identifying individuals at risk for gastric cancer can facilitate an early diagnosis, prompting further diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
