Caffeine withdrawal results in typical symptoms. The most commonly reported are:

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Drowsiness

  • Impaired concentration

  • Work difficulty

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Irritability

  • Increased muscle tension

  • Tremor, nausea, and vomiting (occasionally)

Withdrawal symptoms generally begin 12-24 hours after sudden cessation of caffeine consumption and reach a peak at around 20-48 hours. In some individuals, however, these symptoms can appear within only 3-6 hours and can last for 1 week. Abstinence from doses as low as 100 mg/d, which is around one to two cups of black tea, has been known to produce symptoms of withdrawal.
