A 51-year-old woman presents with an asymptomatic thyroid nodule that can be felt in the neck. She reports that she noticed this painless mass about 2 months ago. She is a nonsmoker with no history of irradiation or conditions associated with thyroid carcinoma. On physical examination, there is a firm 4-cm mass in the low neck to the right of the midline that moves with swallowing.
