Many people now have a certain level of immunity against COVID-19, owing to either vaccination or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. This acquired immunity has pressured the virus to rapidly spawn variants that are able to evade SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies. The virus's evolution enables COVID-19 to continue to affect the global community, challenging researchers to quickly understand and respond to the latest variants and their distinct characteristics.

Omicron (B.1.1.529) is a heavily mutated variant of SARS-CoV-2 with several diverse lineages and sublineages, including BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.2.12.1, BA.3, BA.4, and BA.5. The World Health Organization designated Omicron a variant of concern on November 26, 2021, just days after the first genome had been uploaded upon its discovery in South Africa and Botswana. Since that time, several sublineages of Omicron have become dominant across the globe.
