Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), also called nosocomial pneumonia, is a lower respiratory infection that presents clinically 2 or more days after hospitalization and was not incubating at the time of hospital admission. Most prevalent in medical and surgical intensive care units (ICUs), HAP is a common nosocomial bacterial infection that significantly adds to the length of hospital stays and care costs.
