Wilson had a long history of hypertension and experienced his first stroke at age 40. His second stroke in 1906 left him partially blind in his left eye. In 1907 and again in 1910, he had more neurovascular symptoms, and a third stroke in 1913 caused left arm weakness — all of which was kept hidden from the public.
