The otoscope was first described in France in 1363 and has been in use since that time. The stethoscope is the oldest cardiovascular diagnostic instrument in use, invented in 1816 by René Théophile Hyacinthe Laënnec. Radiography was invented in 1895 and put to clinical use soon thereafter. The Taylor hammer was designed by J. Madison Taylor in 1888 after the 1875 simultaneous description of muscle stretch reflexes by Carl Westphal and Heinrich Erb, and the recognition of the resulting need to percuss the chest.
