Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is typically spread through exposure to large respiratory droplets, smaller aerosols carrying the infectious virus, or via contact transmission. In 2020, the World Health Organization published an update highlighting the importance of social distancing and mask use to mitigate transmission.
Several vaccine platforms (eg, DNA, RNA, inactivated, viral vector, and protein subunit) against SARS-CoV-2 have been implemented across the globe. Because vaccine efficacy (and acquired immunity) wanes with time and as new variants have emerged, vaccine reformulations were introduced in the fall of 2022. These include new bivalent messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine boosters authorized in Europe and the United States to incorporate certain Omicron sublineages.
