Most estimates suggest that the average number of times gas is passed per day is believed to be around 5-15 times. Although no level is clearly established for excessive flatulence, as much as 40 times daily may be normal for some individuals. A common cause of flatulence is swallowed air, which can occur when individuals talk, eat or drink in a hurry, chew gum, smoke, or drink carbonated beverages. Excessive flatulence is often related to an underlying health issue, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Patients with IBS frequently report increased amounts of bloating and gas.
