Antimetabolites that are structurally analogous to the folate molecule can competitively antagonize folate utilization. Methotrexate and trimethoprim are both folate antagonists that inhibit dihydrofolate reductase. Anticonvulsant drugs can interfere with mucosal conjugase, impairing folate absorption. Metformin, alprazolam, and metoprolol are not well-established as causing folate deficiency.
