Chronic kidney disease (CKD) encompasses all degrees of long-term insufficiency in kidney function. Recent estimates indicate that > 10% of the worldwide population is affected by CKD, emerging as one of the leading causes of mortality around the world.
Guidelines by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes define CKD as either a decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of < 60 mL/min/1.73m2 or urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30 mg/g for at least 3 months or kidney damage. Five stages of CKD have been established and are on the basis of the cause, GFR category, and albuminuria category. These stages typically form a continuum and end with kidney failure.
