Pharyngitis is an irritation or infection of the tonsils or pharynx. The etiology is typically infectious; most cases are viral, and most bacterial cases are attributable to group A streptococci (GAS). Other causes include allergy, neoplasia, toxins, and trauma. Acute pharyngitis is more common in winter and early spring.
