Narcolepsy is a disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and uncontrollable sleep attacks. Patients may also be affected by sleep fragmentation, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations around sleep-wake transitions. While the exact etiology of the condition is unknown, most evidence suggests it is a sporadic acquired immune-mediated disease that develops in genetically predisposed persons. Its estimated global prevalence is approximately 25-50 persons out of 100,000.
