Known risk factors for vitamin B12 deficiency include:

  • Age older than 75 years

  • Strict vegetarianism or a plant-based diet

  • Alcohol abuse

  • Atrophic gastritis

  • Crohn's disease

  • Ileal resection

  • Pernicious anemia

  • Postgastrectomy syndrome

  • Tapeworm infection

  • Transcobalamin II deficiency

Organ meats, including liver and heart, are known to contain high amounts of vitamin B12.

Radioiodine ablation of the thyroid has not been found to cause vitamin B12 deficiency.
