Depression is a common illness with very high morbidity and mortality that contributes to diminished and disrupted relationships, adverse outcomes to medical illness, lost work time, substance abuse, and suicide. It is categorized as having at least four of the following symptoms, including depressed mood: anhedonia, weight or appetite change, sleep disturbance, fatigue/loss of energy, feelings of worthlessness, indecisiveness, and suicidal ideation.
Nearly two thirds of people with depression do not seek treatment, and the reason is that they do not realize they have a treatable disease. With appropriate treatment, most people can achieve a significant amelioration of symptoms.
