A 52-year-old Black woman living in Toronto, Canada, presents for a consult after an abnormal finding on a routine mammogram. She does not report any symptoms, and there is no family history of breast cancer or other tumour types. After clinical examination, breast and axillary imaging and a core biopsy, she is diagnosed with a 3 cm, node-negative, hormone receptor (HR)-negative, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive invasive ductal carcinoma in her right breast.

The patient has a child in high school, does not smoke, is 5 ft 8 in tall (1.75 m) and weighs 175 lb (79.38 kg). Her vitals in the clinic are a temperature of 98.3°F (36.8°C), pulse rate of 51 beats/min, respiratory rate of 21 breaths/min and blood pressure of 119/76 mmHg.
