According to the Canadian Immunization Guide, the HZ live attenuated vaccine is contraindicated in patients with primary and acquired immunocompromised states; however, the HZ recombinant inactivated vaccine may be considered for patients who are immunocompromised and > 50 years of age on a case-by-case basis.
The live attenuated vaccine for HZ is contraindicated for minor B-cell deficiency and innate immune defects. Use of low-dose corticosteroids is usually not a contraindication for the live HZ vaccine.
