Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a cardiac arrhythmia characterized by an irregular and often rapid heartbeat, with the potential to cause thromboembolism. The clinical presentation of AF spans the spectrum from asymptomatic AF with rapid ventricular response to cardiogenic shock or devastating cerebrovascular accident.

AF has strong associations with other cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Data suggest that AF increases the risk for stroke fivefold. As a result, risk assessment is an important element in the management of patients with AF.
