Dementia refers to a loss of cognitive functioning and behavioral abilities, such as emotional regulation, language, memory, problem-solving, and visual perception, that affects daily life and activities. Four dementia syndromes account for most cases: Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
