COVID-19 is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Most individuals infected with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without the need for treatment, but others will become seriously ill and require medical attention. In addition, individuals hospitalized for COVID-19 are more likely than those who are not hospitalized to develop post-acute disease sequalae, or "long COVID." Despite a reduction in efficacy against symptomatic infection since the rise of the Omicron subvariants, vaccines have nevertheless continued to significantly reduce the risk of progression to severe infection or death. Timely recognition and knowledge of current preventative and management strategies of patients with severe COVID-19 may help improve patient outcomes.
