This patient's type 1 diabetes is a comorbidity that has been shown to increase the risk for more severe COVID-19 illness. Other comorbidities that contribute to this higher risk include type 2 diabetes, cancer, cerebrovascular disease and heart conditions.
The risk for COVID-19 increases with age; those aged ≥ 65 years are at highest risk, so age is not a risk factor for this patient. Attending university is not a known risk factor for patients developing moderate COVID-19 illness. Male sex is typically linked to more serious disease and death than female sex.
