Populations with altered cell-mediated immunity, whether influenced by a disease, a drug or both, have a higher risk of developing HZ. Studies have demonstrated that individuals with RA who are receiving anti-TNF-α treatment, like this patient, are at an increased risk for HZ.
Typically, risk for HZ increases with age, with those aged ≥ 50 years at a higher risk. White race and BMI are not known risk factors for HZ.
