A 58-year-old man who lives in Ottawa presents at the office with a painful, itchy rash on his face and trunk. He is diagnosed with active herpes zoster (HZ) and will be assessed and managed for HZ today. During a discussion about HZ vaccinations, the patient confirms that he was vaccinated 8 years ago, when he turned 50 years. His medical record shows vaccination at that time with live zoster vaccine (LZV).

The patient is 1.83 m (6 ft) tall and weighs 92.08 kg (203 lb). His vitals in clinic are a temperature of 36.9°C (98.5°F), pulse rate of 48 beats/min, respiratory rate of 20 breaths/min and blood pressure of 119/79 mmHg.
