Protection against HZ wanes around 1 year postvaccination with LZV. This patient was proactive, seeking immunisation through private purchase 8 years ago, when Canada did not offer a publicly funded immunisation program for HZ. Thereafter, it would have been ideal if he continued to receive annual immunisations with LZV to optimise protection, at least until 2017 when the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) was approved. RZV has since demonstrated longer protection than LZV against HZ; data show efficacy of RZV through 4 years for all age groups.
