SCD in younger individuals is rare and often related to undetected or undiagnosed heart conditions. The most common cause is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Other causes include heart rhythm disorders (eg, long-QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome), commotio cordis, and congenital defects. Among adults, coronary artery disease is the most common cause, accounting for as much as 80% of all cases.
