Although there are many options for initial therapy in the management of HIV, the selection of an induction regimen should be guided by considerations such as virologic efficacy, toxicity, pill burden, dosing frequency, drug-drug interaction potential, resistance test results, comorbid conditions, access, and cost. Adverse events associated with highly active antiretroviral therapy are a major consideration in choosing an appropriate treatment regimen as well as in long-term patient management and may require switching regimens.
