Abrupt withdrawal of biological DMARDs has been shown to lead to a high proportion of flares. Conversely, tapering has been shown to be successful in maintaining treatment response. However, before tapering biological DMARD therapy is considered, the patient's disease should be in remission for at least 6 months. Complete discontinuation of biological DMARDs often results in relapse and is not recommended.
