Benzonatate is used to treat coughs caused by the common cold and other breathing problems (eg, pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema, asthma). It works by reducing the reflex in the lungs that causes the urge to cough.
Codeine/pseudoephedrine is not indicated for chronic breathing problems because it poses a high risk for dependence and abuse. Dextromethorphan and guaifenesin are not indicated for chronic breathing problems unless directed by a healthcare provider.
