Smoking is among the risk factors for developing genital warts. It is also linked to persistent HPV infection. The use of oral contraceptives, not intrauterine devices, has also been associated with genital warts. Overt disease may be more common in men; however, infection may be more prevalent in women. Early coital age is also considered a risk factor for acquiring genital warts.
