As a brain disorder, schizophrenia affects how individuals think, feel, and perceive. Although psychosis is the hallmark symptom of schizophrenia, cognitive impairment is a main obstacle to clinical and functional recovery and is present in >80% of patients with schizophrenia. Cognitive symptoms can include deficits in working memory and attention, as well as deficits in executive functions, such as the ability to organize and abstract. In addition, the nuances and subtleties of interpersonal cues and relationships may be difficult for patients with schizophrenia to understand.
