According to the Infectious Diseases Society of America, blood cultures are recommended for patients with skin or soft-tissue infection who have signs and symptoms of systemic toxicity. Blood cultures should also be done in the following circumstances:
Animal bites
Cellulitis of specific anatomic sites such as ocular and facial areas
Moderate to severe disease, such as cellulitis complicating lymphedema
Neutropenia or severe cell-mediated immunodeficiency
History of contact with potentially contaminated water
Patients with cancer who are receiving chemotherapy
