Depression is currently the second leading cause of disability globally, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has projected that major depressive disorder (MDD) will rank first by 2030. As many as 60% of people with depression do not seek professional help because they are unaware that they have a treatable illness. In addition, the painful stigmatization of mental illness by the public and medical community often leads to avoidance of seeking a diagnosis by many patients.
MDD has significant morbidity and mortality and contributes to suicide, adverse outcomes of medical illness, disruption in relationships, substance abuse, and lost work time. With appropriate treatment, most individuals with MDD can achieve a significant amelioration of symptoms and increased quality of life.
