The mechanism of diaphragmatic movement in belching and diaphragmatic breathing is part of the first-line behavioral treatments for rumination. Evidence also indicates that the technique can be used among the lifestyle modifications that help treat GERD. Therapy with proton pump inhibitors is part of standard GERD treatment; however, it is not typically used for rumination. In contrast, contingent exercise is a strategy typically limited to treating rumination and not GERD.
