Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is characterized by bulbar palsy and quadriplegia due to damage in the brainstem, but the condition can have a range of causes. Different behaviors are preserved in many patients, which can help clinicians identify and treat the syndrome. Although LIS survivors frequently experience motor loss that is debilitating and permanent, prompt recognition of and supportive treatment for this disease process is critical. Early rehabilitation can enhance patient quality of life and improve recovery outcomes.

Are you up-to-date on LIS, including causes, presenting symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment? Test your knowledge with this brief quiz.
