For > 38 million individuals around the world currently living with HIV infection, durable viral suppression is a treatment goal. In 2021, 75% of people living with HIV (PLWH) globally were accessing antiretroviral treatment (ART), and 68% were virologically suppressed. ART is highly recommended and almost always necessary to achieve viral suppression. While long-term viral suppression occurs in a small subset of patients not on ART, PLWH known as HIV controllers, it is generally not something that can be predicted when care is initiated.
