Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 15%-20% of patients and can have a significant impact on the parent, their relationship with their infant, and their return to normal function after giving birth. Nearly 50% of patients with PPD go undiagnosed, even though the treatment is fairly straightforward and readily available. Diagnosis is often missed by clinicians as well as patients who may not recognize that their symptoms are unusual and also owing to stigma around new parents. Untreated PPD has significant morbidity risk for both parent and child.
