Hyponatremia, defined as a serum sodium concentration < 135 mEq/L, is among the most critical electrolyte imbalances. It can be seen in isolation or as a complication of other medical illnesses such as cancer, heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, and pneumonia. Normal serum sodium concentration is 135-145 mEq/L; hyponatremia in adults is classified as mild (130-134 mmol/L), moderate (125-129 mmol/L), or profound/severe (< 125 mmol/L). Treatment varies depending on cause and duration, and overly rapid treatment must be avoided.
