Hyponatremia, defined as a serum sodium concentration < 135 mEq/L, is among the most critical electrolyte imbalances. It can be seen in isolation or as a complication of other medical illnesses such as cancer, heart failure, kidney failure, liver failure, and pneumonia. Normal serum sodium concentration is 135-145 mEq/L; hyponatremia in adults is classified as mild (130-134 mmol/L), moderate (125-129 mmol/L), or profound/severe (< 125 mmol/L). Treatment varies depending on cause and duration, and overly rapid treatment must be avoided.

Are you aware of the latest research on hyponatremia, including important risk factors, its relation to COVID-19, and how it affects older patients? Test yourself with this quick quiz.
