Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia.
Biologically, AD is defined by the presence of β-amyloid (Aβ)-containing plaques and tau-containing neurofibrillary tangles, which is evident in brain imaging. Although AD is a clinical diagnosis, neuroimaging has begun to play an increasingly important role not only to facilitate diagnosis once symptoms are present but also to help determine underlying disease etiology. Characteristic changes in the brain that are present in the prodromal and even preclinical stage might help to provide clues to the most effective treatment and potential outcomes for each patient.
