Psoriasis affects approximately 125 million individuals worldwide. It is characterized by the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes in the epidermis and an increase in epidermal cell turnover rate. It involves the skin and joints and has abnormalities in other systems. Five major types of psoriasis have been identified: plaque, inverse, guttate, erythrodermic, and pustular psoriasis.
The most common type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, which accounts for between 80% and 90% of cases. Patients typically experience acute flares and relapses, which can become severe and, in rare instances, can progress to the pustular subtype. Plaque psoriasis typically presents with large oval-circular plaques in the common areas of elbows, knees, and scalp. Scalp psoriasis can also be confluent and diffuse throughout the scalp. The scalp is particularly difficult to treat because of the presence of hair leading to poor accessibility and acceptability of topical therapies.
