Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are composed of over 350 disorders that affect the innate and adaptive immune systems. Also called inborn errors of immunity, these genetic disorders have a yet-to-be-identified molecular basis and are characterized by an increased susceptibility to infection and/or disruption in the regulation of an immunologic pathway. The hallmark of PIDs is recurrent or unusual infections often caused by microorganisms which rarely lead to illness in healthy people. PIDs can predispose patients to autoimmune disease as well as malignancy.
