Clostridioides difficile (CDI) is a gram-positive bacterium and a top cause of morbidity and mortality in several countries. A major cause of diarrhea worldwide, CDI rates present a global health burden, especially among older patients. In contrast to other nosocomial infections, which declined between 2000 and 2009, the number of patients during that period with a primary diagnosis of CDI more than tripled, from 33,000 to 111,000. The number of hospitalized patients with any form of CDI as a diagnosis at time of discharge more than doubled, from about 139,000 to 336,600. However, more community-based cases of CDI are being seen; in fact, where research has been conducted, an estimated 20%-45% of all patients with CDI have community-associated symptom onset.

Are you ready to identify and treat CDI in your patients? Test yourself with this short quiz on risk factors, updated guidelines, and surgical indications.
