Transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, which are distributed throughout subtropical and tropical areas of the world, dengue is the most common and important arthropod-borne viral (arboviral) illness in humans. This includes, most recently, more temperate areas such as the United States, with more than 35 US jurisdictions reporting at least one case as of August 2023, according to data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The incidence of dengue has increased dramatically in recent decades, with estimates of 40%-50% of the world's population at risk for the disease. When detected early and with access to proper medical care, dengue fever is typically a self-limited disease with good outcomes; however, it is often missed, especially at the critical early stages when no dangerous outbreak is present to give the signs.
