Notoriously intractable to treatment, psoriasis is rarely life-threatening but can present a clinical challenge. Manifesting most often as plaque psoriasis, psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disorder with a strong genetic basis. Lifestyle management for psoriasis might include nutrition counseling, weight management, and addressing sources of stress. Current pharmacologic treatments for moderate to severe psoriasis include phototherapy, topical therapy, and biologics. However, combination therapy and treatment switching are common, patient satisfaction remains low, and many patients are left undertreated, untreated, or unhappy with the treatment they are given. For these reasons, psoriasis medications are a rich area for research with many new developments in play.
