Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy that is characterized by muscle weakness and cutaneous manifestations, although it can also involve other organ systems (such as the pulmonary, cardiac, and gastrointestinal systems). It is a rare disorder, with a reported incidence in adults ranging from 1.2 to 17 new cases per 1,000,000 individuals and a prevalence of 5 to 11 cases per 100,000 individuals. Early identification and prompt initiation of treatment are needed to reduce the morbidity and mortality faced by patients with dermatomyositis.
