COVID-19 is highly infectious because it quickly multiplies and spreads throughout the body. Many people believe that COVID-19 affects only the respiratory tract, but it is a multisystem disease. Symptomatic COVID-19 cases often have pulmonary manifestations occurring as mild, moderate, or severe. Severe COVID-19 cases can increase vascular permeability and eventually cause pulmonary edema, with diffuse alveolar damage to the lungs common to most fatalities. A wide spectrum of pulmonary manifestations directly related to the severity of acute illness, including post-exertion dyspnea, fibrotic lung lesions in high-resolution CT, reduction in diffusion capacity, and restrictive pulmonary physiology, have been reported in up to 35% of survivors.
